2021 Vass Lions 67th Christmas Food Drive

by Sue Wagner – President, Vass Lions

The Vass Lions Club has recently completed their 67th annual Food drive. Each year the Club has delivered food boxes to needy families in our area.

22 Lions from our Club participated this year. In addition, we work with the staffs and teachers at 7 local schools who collect non perishable food.

Preparation for the drive starts in September and gets going in earnest in early November collecting the boxes required for the food.

Lions work throughout December collecting the food from the schools and sorting it at the old Rescue Squad building in Vass that the Fire department allows us to use.

The NROTC cadets from Union Pines High School worked outside of the local Food Lion store and they collected more than 10 truck loads of food as well as over $1,200 in donations.

The club purchased 300 chickens, sausages, eggs, bread, and peas for the families as well.

On the morning of December 23rd 16 Lions along with the help of 50 volunteers from the Vass area, packed over 200 boxes of non perishables.

The Lions also delivered 6 truck loads of canned goods to the Vass Food pantry, as well as 300+ Food Lion Gives food boxes to the Carthage Food pantry in addition to 5 more boxes of canned goods, and 5 boxes of canned goods to the Robbins food pantry.

On the morning of the 24th 15 Lions and a number of other great community-minded individuals loaded the food boxes along with the fresh food into pickups, SUVs, and cars and delivered it to 180 families in Moore County.

A total of 24 Lions worked 320 hours on this project.
