Susan O’Brien, from Fort Mill, SC, served as the District Governor of NC’s District 31-O for the Lions year 2023-24. She joined the association in 2010 while living in Brookfield, CT and has been a member of the Waxhaw Lions Club since 2017. She is a Melvin Jones Fellow and the recipient of several awards in recognition of her service and achievements, including two International Presidents’ Certificates of Appreciation, a New Voices in Leadership Award, the Sid L Scruggs III Beacon of Hope (Steps to Service) and a Knight of the Blind (MD23). She has held numerous district and club offices, is a Certified Guiding Lion, and is currently Waxhaw’s Membership Chair. She has sponsored more than 14 new Lions. Susan is a graduate of Carnegie-Mellon University with a dual degree in Physics and Management Science. She worked as a researcher in the semiconductor and aerospace industry for many years and holds a patent from Texas Instruments. She transitioned to a career in procurement, with a specialty in contract negotiations, and retired from Bank of America in 2024. Susan and her husband Michael, a retired carpenter, are the proud parents of four adult children, and grandparents to two young ladies. In addition to her Lions activities, Susan serves on the Board of Directors for Lions Services Inc., a Charlotte-based manufacturing facility that empowers blind and vision impaired people to achieve personal and economic independence through employment opportunities. In her spare time, Susan enjoys creating digital scrapbooks that capture her travel adventures with Michael, water aerobics, and musical performances of all kinds.
